Fleas, the good kind

photo My Romanesque and Statuary necklaces on display at the flea! (www.fromtheashesvintagejewels.com)

So I woke up bright and early yesterday morning, something I don’t usually do on the weekends. Well, actually I try to never do it, weekend or not! Anyway, I spent the day at Artists and Fleas in Williamsburg, Brooklyn hawking my wares.

The market is great, it’s right between Bedford Street which is one of the main shopping and restaurant areas and the Williamsburg Flea at East River State park (http://www.brooklynflea.com/markets/). It’s a busy street with lots of action and tons of shoppers.

The only thing was, it had been a really long time since I’ve sold at a flea market and I forgot how it always makes me feel like a zoo animal. You know, you’re on display, lots of people walk over, smile, point. It’s all very odd, really brings those social anxiety issues right to the surface!

Anyway, the market has a great mix of interesting pieces, check it out at (www.artistsandfleas.com). Most of the offerings are one of a kind designer items and a lot of that is jewelry!

Some of my favorites we’re the brass knuckle pendants and kick ass t’s from Father Panik (http://www.fatherpanik.com/).

Vintage typewriter key cufflinks from Churoncalla (http://churoncalla.com/), cool message pendants and key rings from Metal Taboo (http://www.etsy.com/shop/metaltaboo) and the edgy double finger rings from Snash Jewelry  (http://www.snashjewelry.com/)

So, next weekend make sure you stop by Artists and Fleas, they’re open Saturdays and Sundays and while you’re in Williamsburg check out Eight of Swords Tattoo (www.eightofswords.com) to see my collection!

Snow Day !!!

snowflakeI’ve been in a silly mood all day today. All the impending doom/excitment over a blizzard (especially on a Friday or Sunday) always reminds me of being a kid. That was the best feeling in the world! A three day snow weekend felt like an eternity (an eternity in a good way, not like the eternity being at work feels like).

It’s a snowy Friday night, perfect time to hunker down, curl up with the laptop and shop online! I’m feeling some love for my fellow jewelry designers who show their pieces on Etsy (www.etsy.com). It’s a very cool site where you can find a gazillion neat vintage, handmade and one of a kind pieces. Each seller showcases their items in their very own shop (mine is http://fromtheashesjewels.etsy.com) .

Ship Ahoy

ships ahoy

Woo hoo!! The website is officially up & running as of today!!!!   Take a peek – www.fromtheashesvintagejewels.com

I built it myself. That’s right, rolled up my sleeves, put on the ol’ tool belt, hooked up my caffeine iv. Didn’t know I had it in me. Sure, I used an “easy” do – it – yourself website builder, but I’m a tech reject. Nothing is easy, and if you’ve ever attempted to use one of those things, you know what I mean. I’m a paper and pen kind of girl, I’ll take a notebook over the computer any day!!

So far, there are three categories – Bracelets, Necklaces and Earrings. I’m working on some rings and I’ll be adding new pieces weekly. I can also do custom pieces, and customize a lot of the pieces that are already on the website. So, drop me a line if you have any questions or ideas –  Angela info@fromtheashesvintagejewels.com .

The pieces I create are heavily influenced by the jewelry of the Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and Art Nouveau periods, along with a rock n’ roll edge and tongue in cheek sensibility. Also inspired by the religious art and architecture of Europe I’ve experienced on my travels, I appreciate the beauty of religious icons.

I try to interpret my many influences in a casual, wearable way, to easily integrate my pieces with your unique style. The one of a kind jewels I create incorporate bits and pieces of vintage jewelry and findings. I believe in taking broken, discarded things from the ashes and giving them a new life. Reuse, recycle, repurpose.
