Birthstone Jackpot

Anniston leighton dia Jennifer Anniston wearing Fred Leighton diamonds at the 2013 Oscars (www.fredleighton.com)

Happy diamond month to all of you lucky April babies! You’ve hit the birthstone jackpot! No semi precious tourmaline (October) or Peridot (August) for you, you’ve got the best of the best! And just in case you don’t already know everything there is to know about your super sparkly birthstone, lucky for you I feel like nerding out a bit today.

The history and lore of diamonds date back to ancient times. In fact, the word diamond comes from the ancient Greek word adamas, meaning indestructible and unbreakable. Few things in the world inspire as much lust in women as diamonds do. Some women even want to get married just for the ring, save yourself the trouble and buy your own diamond! Trust me, it’s easier…

There have been many famous diamonds throughout history that have inspired stories and rumors. Undoubedtly one of the most famous is the Hope Diamond.

hope  The famous Hope Diamond http://www.si.edu/Encyclopedia_SI/nmnh/hope.htm

” According to the legend, a curse befell the large, blue diamond when it was plucked (i.e. stolen) from an idol in India – a curse that foretold bad luck and death not only for the owner of the diamond but for all who touched it.

Whether or not you believe in the curse, the Hope diamond has intrigued people for centuries. It’s perfect quality, its large size, and its rare color make it strikingly unique and beautiful. Add to this a varied history which includes being owned by King Louis XIV, stolen during the French Revolution, sold to earn money for gambling, worn to raise money for charity, and then finally donated to the Smithsonian Institution. The Hope diamond is truly unique.” (1)

So, of course we all know the basics, the four c’s – color, cut, clarity and carat weight. The fact that diamond is the hardest gemstone on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, rated a 10. This means that diamonds can scratch any of the gemstones below it including ruby, sapphire and emerald. This is important to remember when storing your jewelry, to prevent pieces from being damaged.  And the nitty gritty, that diamonds are formed when carbon is exposed to extremely high temperature and high pressure, over millions of years, deep inside the earth, they aren’t actually made from coal!

Oscars Baby!!!

Well, the Oscars have come and gone, but the looks shown on the red carpet will be setting trends for at least the next year. So, here’s a round up of last night’s 2013 Oscar red carpet jewelry looks.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals  Zoe Saldana looked elegant and sexy with long, swingy Harry Winston stiletto diamond earrings finished with large pearl teardrops and an edgy wrap around diamond snake ring.

jenn aniston oscars  Jennifer Anniston sparkled in her typical all – American casually elegant way. She accessorized her red Valentino with diamond chandelier earrings and multiple diamond bracelets she wore layered, all from Fred Leighton, THE estate jeweler to the stars.

jenna dewan  I am so obsessed with Jenna Dewan, its nuts! I think part of it might be because she’s a brunette and I love seeing brunette celebs, it seems like almost everyone is a blonde, or some variation of blonde. She is so absolutely gorgeous and looked fabulous accenting her black lace Rachel Roy dress and green, cat eyes with unbelievable Irene Neuwirth hanging earrings, of colorful, fiery opals surrounded by diamonds. Irene Neuwirth (www.ireneneuwirth.com) has become one of my favorite jewelry designers lately. I love that she features black and white opals in her pieces. We’ve been seeing a lot of her jewels on the red carpet lately, remember Busy Philips at the Sag awards last month? (https://fromtheashesvintagejewels.wordpress.com/2013/01/29/snooze-actors-guild-awards/ )

Jennifer-Hudson-oscars-2013-8  Jennifer Hudson also wore opal earrings last night. Her long dangling drops from Sutra added a great pop of color near her face. The bluish green opals were surrounded by diamonds and we’re a younger, cooler look than a big diamond piece.

In the “Excuse me I have to stifle a yawn category” there’s a tie –

chastain oscars  amy adams oscars  Jessica Chastain looked simple and elegant, but not exciting wearing Vintage 1960’s Harry Winston, including a yellow gold and diamond braided style bracelet and a simple cluster earring. Amy Adams could have used a little more bling to brighten up her beautiful, but blah colored pale green Oscar De la Renta confection. She choose hanging pear shaped diamond drop earrings and a woven style diamond bracelet, both by Mouawad.

jenn lawrence  ann hathaway  Best Actress Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence and Best Supporting Actress winner Anne Hathaway both accented their rear views with sparkling diamonds, on the red carpet. Jennifer Lawrence wore a long diamond bead chain by Chopard, draped down the back of her dress. I like the idea, but I don’t think it worked with the silhouette of her gown. The dress was too voluminous for the delicate chain. I think the long chain would have worked better over a more fitted shape. Anne Hathaway accented her dress with a Tiffany necklace of diamond clusters hanging down her back.

918450-jacki-weaver  I loved Jacki Weaver’s  whimsical yet edgy Stephen Webster (www.stephenwebster.com) dangling crescent moon and star earrings. They didn’t work with the dress, but we’re a nice change for the red carpet. I think they would have been better suited for a simple black dress, so the jewels and clothing would not compete. Because we all know you choose the jewelry first and work the outfit around it! Oh wait, that’s not what everyone does, ok, well that’s what I do!

bullock  I LOVE hair jewelry and Sandra Bullock added some sparkle to her simple dark locks in the form of a Harry Winston diamond brooch worn to pull her hair back.

jenn garner oscars  Jennifer Garner had on a phenomenal 19 century looking Neil Lane blackened, cushion cut diamond fringe necklace and simple hanging diamond drops. It was a hipper alternative to a modern looking super sparkly bright white piece. There’s also more of a casual, easy elegance to a blackened piece of jewelry, when you know what you’re doing this is the piece you wear.

19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals  Helen Hunt was beautifully accessorized in a fun and unique Martin Katz multi strand, liquid looking diamond necklace that sparkled like crazy under the lights. She also wore bracelets, earrings and a brooch on the back of her H&M gown all from Martin Katz, totaling a whopping $700k!!

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals  Catherine Zeta Jones paired her sparkly gold Zuhair Murad gown with giant yellow gold, diamond and brown cabochon stone Lorraine Schwartz earrings. The earrings we’re interesting and I do love to see color on the red carpet, but the overall look was a bit too monochromatic for me, between her hair, skin tone, dress and jewelry. A bright green stone would have really given the whole look a kick in the ass.

I don’t know about you, but all of this talk about jewelry is giving me the jewelry buying bug, not that I need much convincing. Well, if you feel like doing a little shopping too, check me out at

Snooze Actors Guild Awards

ZZZZZzzzzzz…. Wow, I hung in there as long as I could last night. I’m not a big award show girl & I have a realllllllly short attention span, so the combo of a gazillion black and navy dresses and a ton of dry speeches does not make for an exciting night of tv, as far as I’m concerned. I watched the red carpet arrivals, and a little bit of the show. I finally had to change the channel at 8:43, and I feel like I deserve an award for lasting even that long! The SAG’s don’t usually garner as much attention as the Globes or of course the Oscars and it wasn’t even on a major network channel.  I had to go searching for it and realized maybe it was hidden for a reason!

As you can probably already tell I wasn’t too impressed with what I saw on the red carpet. So, there were a ton of black dresses, a ton of navy dresses, a couple of Ann Hathaway Golden Globe knock off’s and a few interesting jewelry moments for me.

My red carpet faves –

1- Busy Phillips –

busy

Wearing a FANTASTIC Irene Neuwirth black opal necklace. The greenish, blue opals really popped against her black dress. If you happen to be near Barneys in NYC, take a min to check out their jewelry department, they have a great selection of Irene Neuwirth pieces. http://www.ireneneuwirth.com

2- Jessica Chastain –

Jessica Chastain

Total 1950’s hollywood glamour! Dripping with diamonds, in a Harry Winston waterfall styles diamond necklace, made up of round and pear shaped stones. This is what award shows are all about. I’m a sucker for a classic. There were a couple of other actresses that opted for a classic diamond look in a necklace as well, Jennifer Lawrence and Marion Cotillard.

3- Jane Krakowski –

I love the sherbet orange!!!! What a great color! But, I really liked her David Webb Jewelry. She wore a pair of classic Webb yellow gold, diamond cluster earrings and a really interesting yellow gold, coral bead and diamond bracelet.

Jane

4- Amanda Seyfried –

The beautiful, Lorraine Schwartz Art Deco style, light blue chalcedony and diamond pendant is on a long diamond chain. I love the look of a long necklace, especially on the red carpet, it lends a younger more casual look to the gown. It’s a piece that could also be worn with a tank and jeans.

Amanda Seyfried

5- Morena Baccarin –

This was an interesting look, because it was different. She wore long earrings, with a dark green cabachon stone drop and a jeweled lizard brooch in her hair, from Jacob the Jeweler.

19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Red Carpet

6 – Helen Hunt –

19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals

Her Neil Lane jewels, were a little rock n’ roll, set with diamonds in an oxidized mounting. I loved the lacy, choker look and she also had on a great stack of oxidized, rose cut diamond, Indian style bangles to match.

The Envelope Please

trophy

As our favorite celebs got ready for last night’s Golden Globes, making last minute adjustments to their outfits and deciding which jewels & accessories would either, best compliment their dress (wear rubies with red? blah), make them look thinner (GIANT sparkly earrings near the face, yes that old trick to bring the eye, up, up and away from those trouble spots), younger (REALLY hunky date so no one even looks at you!!), you have to wonder what some of them were really thinking.

So, I came up with a few categories of my own and the winners. I know everyone is on the edge of their seat, so…..drumroll please…….

In the category of ” SO BOOOORING, WHY’D YOU EVEN COME” – The award goes to Marion Cotillard. No earrings! No necklace!  Outrage! And it looked like she was wearing a bath towel.  As far as I’m concerned Anne Hathaway comes in a close second. I know, elegant, simple, demure, blah, blah. Oh I’m sorry, think I dozed off for a minute. With that super short hair and white dress she needed either a major necklace or statement earrings. Something to scream GIRL!!!!!!

Our next category is “WTF?????” – This one is a definite tie, between Zooey Deschanel , a Pearl choker and studs, REALLY? I think you forgot the cardigan and Stacy Keibler, cheapo looking earrings of long dangling chains and blah hair and makeup.

In the “THAT’S RIGHT I’M A BADASS” category – There are three stars I liked. Tina Fey, with her dangling spiky diamond star earrings. Julianne Hough, with her edgy, insect inspired jewelry from Daniella Villegas and Sienna Miller who rocked a couple of studs and a hoop from Jennifer Meyer, all on one ear. I’m a huge fan of a giant diamond chandelier, but it was nice to see something different on the red carpet.

And speaking of huge diamond chandeliers, I had to include my favorite category “BIG GIRL JEWELRY” (as in I’m a grown up and know how to wear shit) – Soooo many giant statement earrings I loved in this category, Julianne Moore, Julie Bowen, Selma Hayek, Megan Fox. But, my favorites we’re Debra Messing with her absolutely GIGANTIC Indian style, probably foilbacked diamond earrings (that worked back to her stacks and stacks of indian bracelets) and Taylor Swift’s sparkly, plummy brown Lorraine Schwartz triple stone drops. Best necklace in this category has to go to Jessica Alba, who wore M-A-J-O-R bling from Harry Winston.
