Met Costume Institute Gala

SJP copy Sarah Jessica Parker wearing a Philip Treacy (www.philiptreacy.co.uk/) mohawk headpiece and Fred Leighton (www.fredleighton.com) jewels

Every May the Glitterati converge on the Metropolitan Museum of Art to benefit and celebrate the museum’s Costume Institute. The Who’s Who of fashion, entertainment and design all stalk the red carpet. Designers attend with their muses, dressing them in elaborate and sometimes over the top, trend setting creations.

It’s got to be one of the hottest tickets of the year in New York, and all of the fun and festivities took place this past Monday night. Can you believe my invite got lost in the mail again??

Everyone from Sarah Jessica Parker, Maggie Gyllenhaal,”Girls” star Lena Dunham, Beyonce, Sienna Miller, Nicki Minaj and many other stars and starlets alike all gathered to turn the 5th avenue shrine to art into a mecca for fashion and all that is fabulous.

Every year the gala focuses around a different theme and this year it is, PUNK: Chaos to Couture and it will be on exhibit from May 9th – August 14, 2013 (http://www.metmuseum.org/)

Stars went all out to pay homage to punk style, but one of the standouts was Sarah Jessica Parker. SJP wore a jeweled Mohawk headpiece by the London milliner Philip Treacy (http://www.philiptreacy.co.uk/) and a suite of 19th century diamond jewelry from the eponymous upper eastside estate jeweler Fred Leighton (www.fredleighton.com).

I’ve been out of commission for the past few days. My pup Julio passed away earlier in the week and  that’s why this blog is so late. He was a great little guy and I’m going to miss him everyday.

Doggies in Diamonds and Puppies in Pearls

Carlos in pearls  Carlos wearing a fringe necklace of teardrop freshwater pearls and diamonds!!

A few of my friends have suggested that I should expand my collection to include a line of jewelry for dogs, for a number of reasons –

A- Because I’m a huge animal person, I have two Chihuahuas, Julio and Carlos and Phoebe the cat

B- Because lots of other people are super into their dogs too

C- Crazy dog people spend big bucks on Fido

D- Dog stores have popped up everywhere you look packed with tons of fun designer gear for your pooch

I don’t know, that just isn’t my thing. I don’t dress up my dogs (maybe because they’re both male), with the exception of possibly a sweater when it’s really cold and that’s only if I can get it on without being bitten!  I have a feeling that if they we’re female I would have long since fallen prey to the siren song of pink puppy tutus, but luckily for them that isn’t the case.

CCK-MIAMI_R  If you’re looking for some real doggy jewels check out the Miami Dog Necklace from Doggie Vogue!

http://www.doggievogue.com/category/dog-necklaces-anklets/miami-dog-necklace

Tons of people dress their dogs up every day, just take a look around on Instagram! The hats! The dresses! The booties! And…the jewelry!

When I worked at Fred Leighton (www.fredleighton.com) there were actually a few clients who purchased jewelry for their dogs. Nothing says I have money to burn, quite like buying a diamond tennis bracelet as a collar for your teacup pup, on your afternoon stroll on Madison Avenue!

Well, I was inspired by all of this puppy jewelry chit chat and snapped a few pic of my Dog Carlos wearing some jewels from my personal collection.

Birthstone Jackpot

Anniston leighton dia Jennifer Anniston wearing Fred Leighton diamonds at the 2013 Oscars (www.fredleighton.com)

Happy diamond month to all of you lucky April babies! You’ve hit the birthstone jackpot! No semi precious tourmaline (October) or Peridot (August) for you, you’ve got the best of the best! And just in case you don’t already know everything there is to know about your super sparkly birthstone, lucky for you I feel like nerding out a bit today.

The history and lore of diamonds date back to ancient times. In fact, the word diamond comes from the ancient Greek word adamas, meaning indestructible and unbreakable. Few things in the world inspire as much lust in women as diamonds do. Some women even want to get married just for the ring, save yourself the trouble and buy your own diamond! Trust me, it’s easier…

There have been many famous diamonds throughout history that have inspired stories and rumors. Undoubedtly one of the most famous is the Hope Diamond.

hope  The famous Hope Diamond http://www.si.edu/Encyclopedia_SI/nmnh/hope.htm

” According to the legend, a curse befell the large, blue diamond when it was plucked (i.e. stolen) from an idol in India – a curse that foretold bad luck and death not only for the owner of the diamond but for all who touched it.

Whether or not you believe in the curse, the Hope diamond has intrigued people for centuries. It’s perfect quality, its large size, and its rare color make it strikingly unique and beautiful. Add to this a varied history which includes being owned by King Louis XIV, stolen during the French Revolution, sold to earn money for gambling, worn to raise money for charity, and then finally donated to the Smithsonian Institution. The Hope diamond is truly unique.” (1)

So, of course we all know the basics, the four c’s – color, cut, clarity and carat weight. The fact that diamond is the hardest gemstone on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, rated a 10. This means that diamonds can scratch any of the gemstones below it including ruby, sapphire and emerald. This is important to remember when storing your jewelry, to prevent pieces from being damaged.  And the nitty gritty, that diamonds are formed when carbon is exposed to extremely high temperature and high pressure, over millions of years, deep inside the earth, they aren’t actually made from coal!

Easter Luxe

pink egg

If you’re anything like me, you probably still color Easter eggs. Give me something I can decorate, sprinkle some glitter on and I’m there! As a kid, I remember my Grandmother having a wonderful, bejeweled egg on a pedestal in her china cabinet (now there’s a word you don’t hear too often anymore!).

Of course at the time I had no idea that it was supposed to look like a Faberge egg, or had I even heard of them. I just knew it was sparkly, dazzling and totally captivated me. I wanted to wear it on a chain or permanently affix it to my head. The fact that it was an actual egg made no difference to me, I was a weird little kid, ok.

Fabrerge eggs have a long and storied history. “It was in 1885 that the first Imperial egg was produced. The beautifully simple egg opened up to reveal a yolk. Inside the yolk was a golden hen and inside the hen was a diamond miniature of the crown and a tiny ruby egg.

The egg was a gift to the Czarina Maria. It reminded her of home and each year thereafter, a new egg was commissioned by the Czar and created by Fabergé for the Czarina. The eggs became elaborately more jeweled, conveyed historical meaning and had a hidden surprise.

FabergeRoseTrellis

The Czar gave his wife an egg every year during the Russian Orthodox Easter festival. From 1895 to 1916, his successor, Nicholas II, gave two Easter eggs each year, one to his wife and one to his mother. A total of fifty Imperial eggs were made for the Russian Czars, but several have been lost. ” (1)

Faberge also made miniature versions of the eggs to be worn as pendants. I had the pleasure of seeing a few of them when I was at Fred Leighton (www.fredleighton.com). These tiny sparkling treasures are difficult to find and an impressive addition to any jewelry collection.

Watch This

watchI have a friend’s wedding to go to in a few weeks and while trying to put together my outfit and jewelry, I thought of something.

My Jewelry pet peeve #652 – When women wear watches out at night, especially with something formal. I know you’re probably thinking this is petty, but this is the kind of stuff I’m tuned into. Jewelry is usually the first thing I’ll notice when it comes to what someone is wearing, I zoom in like radar! I just don’t get it, you changed your shoes, you changed your dress, change the jewelry too!

In general I don’t think watches go with formal dresses (I hate that word, but nothing else really works either, like evening dress?), anyway leave it at home. There’s no reason to wear your office Seiko, with your Valentino. If you do insist on wearing a watch out at night make it something sparkly! Or if a ton of sparkle isn’t quite your thing, a cool antique or vintage style watch with a delicate face and a black cord or satin bracelet works too!

evening watch  citizen watch

The only thing with antique watches is that they often do not keep time reliably, sometimes even after having them overhauled. So, if it’s a super gorgeous piece you can just wear it as a bracelet if it doesn’t work. I had a friend that collected watches and while I think all of hers worked, she didn’t always have them set correctly or even have batteries in them, so hers were always for show. When I worked at Fred Leighton we sold beautiful estate watches, diamond art deco pieces and 1940’s “tutti frutti” watches set with carved rubies, sapphires and emeralds. Those aren’t the type of timepieces that most of us can afford (me included) but there are plenty of other options out there.

Oscars Baby!!!

Well, the Oscars have come and gone, but the looks shown on the red carpet will be setting trends for at least the next year. So, here’s a round up of last night’s 2013 Oscar red carpet jewelry looks.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals  Zoe Saldana looked elegant and sexy with long, swingy Harry Winston stiletto diamond earrings finished with large pearl teardrops and an edgy wrap around diamond snake ring.

jenn aniston oscars  Jennifer Anniston sparkled in her typical all – American casually elegant way. She accessorized her red Valentino with diamond chandelier earrings and multiple diamond bracelets she wore layered, all from Fred Leighton, THE estate jeweler to the stars.

jenna dewan  I am so obsessed with Jenna Dewan, its nuts! I think part of it might be because she’s a brunette and I love seeing brunette celebs, it seems like almost everyone is a blonde, or some variation of blonde. She is so absolutely gorgeous and looked fabulous accenting her black lace Rachel Roy dress and green, cat eyes with unbelievable Irene Neuwirth hanging earrings, of colorful, fiery opals surrounded by diamonds. Irene Neuwirth (www.ireneneuwirth.com) has become one of my favorite jewelry designers lately. I love that she features black and white opals in her pieces. We’ve been seeing a lot of her jewels on the red carpet lately, remember Busy Philips at the Sag awards last month? (https://fromtheashesvintagejewels.wordpress.com/2013/01/29/snooze-actors-guild-awards/ )

Jennifer-Hudson-oscars-2013-8  Jennifer Hudson also wore opal earrings last night. Her long dangling drops from Sutra added a great pop of color near her face. The bluish green opals were surrounded by diamonds and we’re a younger, cooler look than a big diamond piece.

In the “Excuse me I have to stifle a yawn category” there’s a tie –

chastain oscars  amy adams oscars  Jessica Chastain looked simple and elegant, but not exciting wearing Vintage 1960’s Harry Winston, including a yellow gold and diamond braided style bracelet and a simple cluster earring. Amy Adams could have used a little more bling to brighten up her beautiful, but blah colored pale green Oscar De la Renta confection. She choose hanging pear shaped diamond drop earrings and a woven style diamond bracelet, both by Mouawad.

jenn lawrence  ann hathaway  Best Actress Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence and Best Supporting Actress winner Anne Hathaway both accented their rear views with sparkling diamonds, on the red carpet. Jennifer Lawrence wore a long diamond bead chain by Chopard, draped down the back of her dress. I like the idea, but I don’t think it worked with the silhouette of her gown. The dress was too voluminous for the delicate chain. I think the long chain would have worked better over a more fitted shape. Anne Hathaway accented her dress with a Tiffany necklace of diamond clusters hanging down her back.

918450-jacki-weaver  I loved Jacki Weaver’s  whimsical yet edgy Stephen Webster (www.stephenwebster.com) dangling crescent moon and star earrings. They didn’t work with the dress, but we’re a nice change for the red carpet. I think they would have been better suited for a simple black dress, so the jewels and clothing would not compete. Because we all know you choose the jewelry first and work the outfit around it! Oh wait, that’s not what everyone does, ok, well that’s what I do!

bullock  I LOVE hair jewelry and Sandra Bullock added some sparkle to her simple dark locks in the form of a Harry Winston diamond brooch worn to pull her hair back.

jenn garner oscars  Jennifer Garner had on a phenomenal 19 century looking Neil Lane blackened, cushion cut diamond fringe necklace and simple hanging diamond drops. It was a hipper alternative to a modern looking super sparkly bright white piece. There’s also more of a casual, easy elegance to a blackened piece of jewelry, when you know what you’re doing this is the piece you wear.

19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals  Helen Hunt was beautifully accessorized in a fun and unique Martin Katz multi strand, liquid looking diamond necklace that sparkled like crazy under the lights. She also wore bracelets, earrings and a brooch on the back of her H&M gown all from Martin Katz, totaling a whopping $700k!!

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals  Catherine Zeta Jones paired her sparkly gold Zuhair Murad gown with giant yellow gold, diamond and brown cabochon stone Lorraine Schwartz earrings. The earrings we’re interesting and I do love to see color on the red carpet, but the overall look was a bit too monochromatic for me, between her hair, skin tone, dress and jewelry. A bright green stone would have really given the whole look a kick in the ass.

I don’t know about you, but all of this talk about jewelry is giving me the jewelry buying bug, not that I need much convincing. Well, if you feel like doing a little shopping too, check me out at
