Real Men Wear jewelry?

skullringhttp://www.badassjewelry.com/stainless-steel-mechanical-skull-ring-dbssr005.html

For years men’s jewelry was relegated to one or maybe two display cases in the furthest corner of most jewelry stores. In general you would see the same stuff wherever you went, gold chains, an ID bracelet, crosses, and a few rings, an onyx one and the mall favorite “DAD”.

Then of course there was my stint as manager of the men’s department at the store I worked at on Fifth Avenue. For a month straight I tried to organize what seemed like a million pairs of cufflinks and silver key rings, exciting stuff.

Men’s jewelry has gone through a lot of changes in the past few years, and guys seem to be wearing a lot more than just a watch and a wedding band. Collections have gotten a lot more fashion forward and edgier. Sterling and stainless steel have made pieces a lot more casual and wearable. With companies like Skull n Roses, King Baby, Versani and Bad Ass Jewelry all doing some cool stuff.

Recently, I’ve had a few guys asking if I do a men’s collection, so I’m working on some things and I’ll keep everyone posted on when they’re finished!

Spring Cleaning

diamond-backgroundWell, it’s time for spring cleaning and I’m not talking closets. Regularly cleaning your jewelry keeps it bright and sparkly, and that’s why we wear it, right?

Most precious and semi-precious stones can be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaning machine, like the ones found in jewelry stores.  However, one major exception is Emeralds. They are softer than many precious gemstones, and often very included. The ultrasonic waves cause vibrations that basically shake the jewelry clean, but they can also enlarge inclusions and can cause the oil that many emeralds are treated with to ooze out. So, the best way to clean emeralds is really just with a damp soft cloth.

Other good options for cleaning jewelry at home are commercial liquid jewelry cleaner, you know the kind in the jar with the little tray and tiny brush, put it in swoosh it around and voila! Good old fashioned mild soapy water and a soft toothbrush work well too.

Other stones require special care because they are porous and the harsh chemicals in most jewelry cleaners can affect them. Pearls, coral, opal and turquoise should generally just be cleaned with a soft damp cloth to preserve their beauty.

An anti-tarnish polishing cloth is an easy way to keep silver, gold and platinum shiny and looking good.

A good rule of thumb is to make your jewelry the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off, this is especially important to remember when wearing pearls. Due to their delicate, organic nature many everyday products like makeup, perfume, hairspray and lotion can dull the surface and eat away at the nacre.

New pieces will be on the site soon!!  WWW.FROMTHEASHESVINTAGEJEWELS.COM

Greek Dressing

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERAThis is a new addition to my collection. The Romanesque necklace is inspired by 19th century Greco – Roman Revival jewelry. “Victorians we’re fascinated with ancient history. For them history meant revivals. Archeological discoveries and published accounts of ancient historical events and epics prompted revivals of jewelry styles from ancient and medieval cultures.” (1) There we’re other styles of revivalist jewelry as well during the 19th century, such as Etruscan, Archaeological and  Renaissance Revival.

The centerpiece of the necklace is a vintage green glass intaglio pendant depicting a warrior in profile. This was a typical motif in Greco-Roman Revivalist jewelry, which remained a popular movement in design from the mid 19 century onward.

The intaglio pendant is suspended from a vintage, antique gold tone chain in a swag style, accented with tiny textured, antique silver toned cross charms.

But don’t let all of this historical crap scare you off. The Romanesque necklace is an easy to wear piece with plenty of casual cool, that looks great with jeans and a T shirt!
