Hidden Treasures

04 Mar

marketEvery so often you catch a story in the news about someone that stumbled upon a hidden treasure at a garage sale that they paid $5.00 for, but turns out it’s really worth $50,000! Last week, while I was watching semi crappy reality TV, I saw a story about a guy in California that scored two boxes of original Ansel Adams glass plate negatives for $45, back in the spring of 2000. After four years of researching the negatives, he realized they we’re possibly Ansel Adams and probably very valuable, both we’re true. The negatives we’re eventually estimated to be worth approximately $200 million!

This sparked me to hit some flea markets this weekend, not because I expected to find a multimillion dollar hidden gem, but you never know what you’re going to find. I rarely leave empty handed and there are so many things to touch, rows and rows of shiny sparkly stuff!!! That last part really appeals to my OCD side!

Anyway, when I was a kid, me and my Dad would scan the local papers and hit all the flea markets and garage sales that advertised jewelry. The worst thing was when it was nothing but a weekend full of furniture and tools! My focus back then was 1950’s and 60’s jewelry and I amassed a huge collection of clip on and screw back earrings from every corner of Brooklyn and Manhattan. In recent years, I’ve been more into vintage religious jewelry and medallions, some I take apart and incorporate into my own designs, chunky vintage chains and generally anything interesting (that’s subjective, I know), very old and worn. I love pieces that have lived multiple lives, something with a history.

I found two great pieces over the weekend. They both look pretty old, maybe 1930’s, 20’s? A pendant set with a large, oval purple glass stone in intricate oxidized silver setting and a deep orange stone set into pin that almost has an Egyptian revival feeling, with a snake influenced design surrounding it.  I’m not sure what I’m going to do with them yet, but I do know I can’t wait to scour some more flea markets next weekend and add to my collection!
